Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei is a philosopher and philologist, and founder of publishing house. He teaches at the University of New York in Tirana, Albania and the Royal Academy of the Arts, The Hague, The Netherlands. Together with Jonas Staal he published Follow Us Or Die (New York/Dresden: Atropos Press, 2009). He is also contributing editor of the online journal continent.

Dmitrij Funk is a professor of anthropology and ethnology, head of Siberian department at the Moscow based Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His main fields of interests include social and economic transformations, adaptations, and sustainable development, (ethnic) identities and social structures of Siberian peoples, anthropology of religion, especially interethnic connections/influences in Shamanism, Islam, Buddhism, and neo-religious movements, social context of cultural heritage, activities in the field of applied anthropology, and some others. He has published numerous books and papers. Among his works are bilingual publications of folklore texts Teleut Folklore (Moscow, 2004), Shor Hero Epics in 2 volumes (Moscow/Kemerovo, 2010, 2011), monographs The Bachat Teleuts in the XVIII – First Quarter of the XX Century: Historical and Ethnographic Investigation (Moscow, 1993), Teleut Shamanism: Traditional Ethnographic Interpretations and New Research Opportunities (Moscow, 1997), Worlds of Shamans and Epic-Singers (Moscow, 2005), as well as many (co)edited books especially in the field of post-soviet transformations among indigenous peoples of Siberia. His interest to native Siberian languages has recently led to creation of a web-portal Endangered Languages of Indigenous Peoples of Siberia and the unique database Corpus of Folklore Texts.

Heroic Epics of the Shors

The Shors are one of Siberia’s smaller peoples, with a population of about 14,000. They live mainly in the southern part of Western Siberia, in the southern part of the Kemerovo region, an area informally known as Mountainous Shoria. Only a small percentage of the Shors, around 5-10%, is still able to speak Shor as their mother tongue, making it an extremely endangered Turkic language. Apart from many other cultural features this ethnic group is especially well-known for its rich epic tradition. Like epic tales of many other Turkic speaking groups of Siberia, as well as Mongolian heroic epic tales, Shor epics describe mostly two themes, one with the hero’s quest for a wife and the other one where the hero struggles with foreign invaders. But even these two main themes can be and are still realized in hundreds of variations or motif-series, using the whole richness of an epic tradition. All epic texts presented in the book have been recorded by hand by a famous Shor story-teller Vladimir Tannagashev (1932-2007) at the request of this volume’s editor. An epic tale “Kün-Köök who does not see the sun” has appeared recently in a Russian translation, but two other tales, “Chabys-Chapan” and “Altyn-Qosta riding a light-hair bay with yellowish markings,” are being published for the first time. The publication of original Shor texts, edited according to the rules of Shor orthography and punctuation, is supplemented with English translations and ethnolinguistic comments.

4. Только эксперимент может представлять настоящее время.  Нам в большей степени интересно все новое, будь то в прошлом, настоящем или будущем. Нам нравится публиковать что-то между категориями, что-то балансирующее на гранях языка, открывая его безграничные возможности. Для нас любая аудитория – целевая.  Нам не нравится слово “авангард”, мы не в армии.

3. Авторское право не в правилах. Авторское право зачастую не в пользу автора, и нам не нравится сохранять за собой право авторства на книги. Поэтому все публикации – на бумаге, либо в электронном виде – выпускаются под лицензией “Creative Commons”. Вся прибыль от публикации в равной степени распределяется между автором и нами.

2. Издания можно выпускать в тираж по мере необходимости. Поскольку обычные книжные магазины продают все меньше и меньше, и большие книжные хранилища только повышают стоимость продукции, мы публикуем книги, основываясь на принципе “печать по требованию”. Как только появляется заказ на книгу, мы приступаем к печати. Временные рамки и тираж изданий не ограничен.

1. Все языки равны. Мы считаем, что все языки абсолютно равны, и каждый отдельный язык имеет особую значимость в этом мире с самого его появления. Следовательно, все языки приемлемы для публикации: будь то реальный, вымышленный, искусственный, живой, вымирающий, или уже вымерший. Мы всегда стараемся понять и обдумать все, что мы получаем.

У нас нет названия, под которым мы занимаемся издательством, слово «Издатель» существует во всех языках. Мы боремся за язык: поэтически, эпически, философски, лингвистически, этнографически или иным образом. Мы верим в пять истин, и нам нравится работать с авторами, которые находят себя в них. Не смотря на то, что это написано на английском языке, вы должны нам доверять.
